Ilene Shaw conceived of this powerful platform to inspire and inform the public about design. Through lively design activities, DESIGN PAVILION increases awareness of the power of design and the many design events occurring around town during NYCxDESIGN, New York’s official design weeks.
In 2016, its inaugural year, DESIGN PAVILION™, a five-day public activation, presented a curated collection of creative structures and displays, and served as the public hub during NYCxDESIGN. It's an immersive urban experience with daily programming, interactive exhibits, centrally located in a public venue, and host to NYC DESIGN TALKS™.
In May 2017, Design Pavilion reemerged in the heart of Times Square where it continued to serve as a public center for the city’s official design weeks, with the NYCxDESIGN Information Kiosk and the new DESIGN MARKET NYC, inviting community engagement in a design awakening!
In May 2018, Design Pavilion returned to Times Square for 9-days as the public face of NYCxDESIGN and hosted the official NYCxDESIGN media launch, expanded to 4 city plazas, welcomed 3.7 million visitors, added the Nasdaq network to our outreach, and generated 100 million impressions for 21 sponsors.
The Design Pavilion program continues to grow annually. In May 2019, Design Pavilion returned to Times Square for the third time, for 13-days in celebration of NYCxDESIGN, expanded to 5 city plazas, welcomed 4.7 million visitors and generated 151+ million impressions for 42 sponsors.
